* We have an inhabitant in our chimney again. It appears that we have lovingly become the annual home of the Black Phoebe family. Every day this week while watching morning television, my program is interrupted by “tee-hee, tee-hee, tee-hoo!” from the vent on the mantle. Seriously. The magpie, of course, loves that our home is enmeshed in the circle of life. I’m not thrilled about the noise, but the bird is pretty cute. I’m referring to it as “Phoebes”, a la FRIENDS as he/she dives in and out searching for bugs. I figure if it eats up the population of flies, mosquitos, or ants around, I’ll be happy to have her nest. An interesting fact? Wikipedia reports that the male Black Phoebe shows the female potential nest sites by hovering in front of a likely spot. The female makes the final decision about where to place the nest and does all the construction. Not too far off from what actually happens in the human world. Do you suppose there is some bird-world Home Depot where there are woodpeckers standing around waiting for day labor as the male Phoebes strut by with a load of mud and grass? What would you call it? Nest Station?

* Speaking of day laborers, have you seen the video of the Mexican man who pulls up to a high rise in a pickup where a bunch of suits are hanging out, and begins calling out needs for executive day laborers? He’s all like, “I need an accountant...” and they are all clamoring for work. It’s quite humorous, though not so politically correct.
