See the column on the right? And the chair just behind and to the left on the aisle? That's the seat I fell asleep in and nearly fell out of on the trip to DC with our 8th graders two years ago as we listened to the world's most boring docent and Wilkes-Boothe lover of all time. That said, the place is pretty cool.
I've also been to Gettysburg... which is moving to see the cemetary and the ridges where stone walls built by soldiers still exist. Not so much the massive marble monuments to every state stuck in the corn field all over the place.
And so, here s my personal tribute to Mr. Lincoln, on this, his birthday. I'm guessing his mother didn't get much of a Valentine's Day that year either.
Two days until the boy's 6th birthday. Nana has arrived and I'm more than ready for a four day weekend. Can't wait for today to be over in fact!
Enjoy your president's day and have some lovely memories as well. Here's a run down of my presidential memories:
Grade 3: I am pissed when I'm forced to be in the "Carter" group and go to the Democratic campaign headquarters on our field trip while my friends get to go to Reagan's Republican center. I'm pretty sure I pouted all day and held my friends in contempt for their jelly beans story.
Grade 8: I play some dude from a Carolina in the mock Constitutional Convention in Mr. Griffin's history class.
Grade 10: I run for class secretary. A complete farce of an office. Thus ends my political career.
Grades 11/12: I adore Barbara Bush. I don't know why.
College: I go to a Jesse Jackson speech, hit a Clinton/Gore Rally, and catch Al Gore waving to me from his limo as I head home after British Lit 204.
And then, the W years.
Thank God for Obama.
